The streetscape along Fourth Street and the streets running toward the creek is a mix of substantial early-to-mid 20th century houses with mature canopy, waterfront lots with dock access to Spa Creek, and a neighborhood character that rewards appropriate landscaping and punishes generic franchise-crew work.

The soil in Murray Hill is transitional — clay-dominant in the higher inland sections, transitioning to sandy loam closer to Spa Creek and the creek-bank properties. Properties facing Spa Creek directly have salt spray exposure from the southwest winds that push Bay air up the creek. Properties up the ridge have the clay drainage problems that characterize inland Annapolis. Some lots have both — clay subsoil with a sandy loam surface horizon that’s been amended over years of landscape work.
